lab grown meat is good or bad?
Scientists have been culturing meat in labs for years. But the convincing consumers to turn away from the challenges of culturing meat in the lab is one thing, but storied to kill it and grill it a method of eating. The demand is massive industrialized livestock system that is problematic for the planet. One cow can consume up to 11000gallons of water a year, so the worldwide livestock is responsible for 15 percent of greenhouse gas emissions.
Just a handful of cells offer a way to potentially grow thousands of meals by cultured tissue. Theoretically, from little one piece of tissue, we can create an unlimited amount says Mike Selden, CEO of Finless Foods.
For long we can look back, people have been eating meat for years. We know that meat comes from animals, but science has recently changed this way and found another better option. It’s now possible to grow meat in lab or in-vitro, outside the animal body, this process is called lab grown meat or cultured meat.
After knowing this the first question comes to our mind is how lab grown meat is made?
To understand this we take an example of a cow. Scientist uses a cows stem cells the cells are placed in a Petri dish with amino acids, carbohydrates, vitamins and minerals to help the muscle cells multiply and grow same as on living organism. Once the muscle fibres have grown in a lab, the result is a meat that resembles a cow-beef.
Growing cells as a meat instead of animals is a very expensive method. The startup process is designed to reduce their cost in a different way. the huge amount of funds is allocated in cellular agriculture is the medium made of sugars, salts, and amino acids used for growing cells.
In 2013, the first lab-made hamburger was produced and it cost is about $325,000. Though the cost had dropped to around $11 in 2015. but the first clean meat produced from animals cells may be in restaurants by the end of 2018. But with advanced technology, the cost to produce cultured meat should continue to decrease.
Same like beef some other cultured chicken and duck products are in works scientist experimenting with the same process of cells agriculture to produce milk, eggs, and leather.
A process of in-vitro meat
The lab grown meat companies have emphasized the novelty of the processes of growing meat in order to get patents and attract the investor. Growing meat is very different and expensive process of breeding and slaughtering animals. It starts with the submersion of stem cells from donor animals into a serum that is placed into a bioreactor.
To grown animal flesh cells in a lab, some techniques exist 3D printers have the potential to print lab grown meat that is not only multidimensional but also contains fat and blood.
However, some environmentalists believe the process could be the key to reducing global warming, with one study predicting it could lower harmful greenhouse emissions by 96 percent.
